Jim Clark Revival 2006 at Hockenheim
the 2006 Jim Clark Revival Festival was held at Hockenheim circuit
from April 27th to 30th, meaning we were looking forward towards two
days of historic racing, pitwalks, interesting chats with mechanics
and drivers alike (no pit babes worth speaking of, though, but that
fact only made it easier to get close to the cars ;).
We spent two nights at the local "camping lot" which sadly was
nothing more than a woody strip between the Autobahn and the circuit
perimeter, and which also did its best to create the authentic
atmosphere of a 60's Grand Prix event: no facilities worth mentioning,
just a couple of mobile loos and eight showers for the entire lot.
I have no idea why the organizers failed to set up a small shop at
least for the duration of the event, but I guess they had their
reasons. The weather held up nicely, too, and except for a snow shower
(in late April!) just in time for the Historic F2 race #1, we were
able to sit in the sun on the grandstands at the "Sachskurve" and
enjoy a splendid view over the entire "Motodrom" part of the circuit.

The F1 Clienti pit was the only part of pit lane *not* open to public access, I guess it figures *shrug*

Jim Clark Memorial
|

|
The Jim Clark Memorial commemorates two-times world champion Jim Clark who lost his life in an F2 Event at the Hockenheim circuit.
When the track was redesigned in 1999, the memorial was moved from the spot of the accident to the start of the old "Waldgerade" (forest straight), where the new circuit takes a sharp right turn into the parabolica straight.
As the day of his death (Apr. 4th) was just a couple of weeks past, some flowers laid down by his sisters are still in quite good condition.

|

|
Talking a short walk along the old track layout, one can still clearly see the right bend before the first chicane in the old layout. The old circuit was torn down and is left for wildlife to repopulate it again in exchange for the area cleared for the new Hermann Tilke layout.
Lots of vegetation is already back, especially lots of shrubs of broom which should make the area look just like Scotland when May comes and there's "yellow on the broom" as some Scottish tune tells; a fitting and emotional setting to mark the place where Jim lost his life.
